Micro Machining Solutions from the CHIRON Group Advance Precision Manufacturing
Targeting specific markets and meeting the production requirements of today and tomorrow with innovative manufacturing solutions is central to the CHIRON Group’s strategy. One area gaining significant importance is high dynamic micro machining of precision parts with short cycle times and tolerances in the micrometer range. For these tasks, the company offers two tailored solutions: the established Micro5 and the new Micro5 XL, which extends the application range.
Both models set new standards in the machining of demanding components, such as those used in medical technology, precision engineering and fine mechanics, and in all applications where dynamics and highest accuracy are essential. A defining feature is the exceptional ratio between the machine’s structural dimensions and the maximum workpiece size. For the Micro5, this means a milling center of 250 mm capable of handling workpiece volumes up to 50 mm. For the Micro5 XL, the machine’s core measures 600 mm for workpiece volumes up to 120 mm. This ratio is unique and combines extreme compactness with outstanding performance.
Benchmark in micro machining: the Micro5
Whether for medical components, watch parts, fine jewelry or delicate components in precision and micro mechanics, the Micro5 is the ideal choice for machining small, high-value workpieces. What began as a small revolution has become the most successful micro machining solution on the market. Weighing just 550 kg and requiring only a 230 V connection for true plug-and-play integration, the Micro5 can be installed flexibly in almost any production environment, even directly at the workstation. Despite its ultra-compact footprint, it delivers high static and mechanical rigidity and provides the accuracy required for the most demanding geometries.
Micro machining in a new dimension: the Micro5 XL
At EMO 2025 in September, the CHIRON Group presented the Micro5 XL, which attracted considerable attention. But what differentiates this new micro machining solution, beyond the proven strengths of the Micro5, from other systems? Why “a new dimension”? XL stands for longer travel paths, higher machining performance and maximum flexibility, opening new possibilities in 5-axis simultaneous HSC machining. Typical applications include medical products such as knee inlays and bone plates, as well as larger watch cases or bracelets. The Micro5 XL handles workpiece volumes up to 120 mm on a footprint of only 1.7 m², featuring high dynamic BC 5-axis kinematics, spindle speeds of 40,000 or 50,000 rpm and jerk values up to 900 m/s³. This enables exceptional path and machining speeds with maximum precision.
Perfectly matched: automation solutions
For greater productivity and autonomy in series production, the Micro5 can be combined with the Variocell UNO handling system. It loads and unloads up to two machines, manages automated handling of workpieces and tools, and accommodates up to ten pallets. Tool changes take less than five seconds.
For the Micro5 XL, the CHIRON Group offers three automation variants: a pallet automation system and two workpiece automation solutions, either with a robot or with the new Variocell PICK&PLACE using linear handling. The system transfers raw parts from the storage pallets into the clamping device and returns finished parts to the storage area. A key advantage for intuitive operation and short setup times is that both machine and automation follow the same operating logic. Operation takes place from the front with direct visibility of the machining process. As a result, multiple production units can be placed closely together, allowing manufacturing capacity to scale easily with demand.
