At its recent Open House in Gosheim, Hermle presented a series of technological innovations. One of the standout unveilings was the next-generation RS 2 robotic system: the RS 2 GEN2. This development marks a major step towards advanced automation in the machining industry.
Hermle brings over 25 years of experience in developing automation solutions. Initially focused on simple pallet changers and compact handling systems, the company now offers integrated robotic systems for full process autonomy. The Open House confirmed Hermle’s commitment to expanding this line. The new RS 2 GEN2 is designed for maximum flexibility, enhanced storage capacity, and efficient deployability. With a modular design available in four configurations, it supports feeding one to three machining centers, significantly increasing production capacity and simplifying scalability.
A core innovation is the dynamic racking module system. By replacing fixed rack formats with automatically configured modules based on laser measurements, space is used more efficiently. This enables a higher number of pallets to be stored in a more compact footprint. Central to the system is a six-axis robot arm with a load capacity of 210 kg. This robot can service multiple machines, rack modules, and setup stations, and it autonomously switches between workpiece types through automated jaw and gripper changes.
Efficiency and scalability prioritized
Beyond flexibility, the RS 2 GEN2 benefits Hermle itself. Previous generations involved custom configurations for each project. The new platform allows standardized solutions, reducing development time and costs. Grippers are available in standard and hybrid versions, suitable for round and square workpieces. The system also supports automated clamping jaw changes, enabling a wide range of workpiece sizes and six-sided machining. This approach reduces setup times and error risk, enhancing reliability and process stability. Hermle’s automation strategy aligns with the industry's growing demand for scalable and future-proof production solutions.
Following its successful launch at the Open House in Gosheim, Hermle will showcase the RS 2 GEN2 at EMO Hannover 2025. The international trade fair provides a platform to demonstrate the system’s capabilities to machining specialists and production engineers worldwide.
