Okuma has introduced 3D-Direct, a shopfloor programming application for 3D milling operations on the OSP control. Users can import STEP models, identify machinable features and select machining strategies. The system also supports verification at the machine. It is intended to simplify complex machining tasks, particularly in variant-rich and small-batch production. The application places the complete programming workflow on the machining centre. A 3D model is imported into the OSP control as a STEP file. The system processes the geometry and highlights machinable areas on the screen. Operators can then link relevant geometries, select tools and adjust machining parameters.
3D-Direct proposes machining strategies and supports simulation directly on the control. Once the workflow is complete, the system performs an automatic collision check. The operator can then release the program and begin machining. Okuma will initially make the application available for vertical machining centres from April 2027. Its first public presentation is scheduled for AMB 2026 in Stuttgart.
From STEP model to released program
3D-Direct is designed around a guided sequence. The operator begins with the imported model and completes the relevant machining steps on the control. The software automatically identifies features in the geometry. It then presents machinable areas as a visual basis for subsequent decisions. Supported operations include face milling, pocket machining, drilling, slotting and edge machining. For each operation, the user can assign suitable tools and adjust machining parameters where necessary. The system then suggests machining strategies and enables simulation before program release.
A key element is the automatic collision check. This forms part of the workflow before machining starts. The application links geometry, machining strategy and verification in one process. As a result, it reduces the number of manual inputs required during programming. This can be particularly relevant when parts are produced in small quantities. It also supports production environments where frequent component changes require new programs at short notice.
Support for less experienced operators
The guided and visual structure of the application is intended to support operators with less programming experience. Users do not need to create the links between part geometry, toolpaths and verification steps manually. Instead, 3D-Direct establishes these connections within the workflow. This provides a clearer route from the CAD model to a released machining program. For manufacturing companies, the practical implication is reduced dependency on specialised programming personnel for supported 3D milling tasks. The system is aimed at situations involving a broad range of components, short production runs or changing orders. These conditions can place pressure on programming capacity.
Okuma also points to the possibility of reproducing completed machining operations. Once a workflow has been created and verified, it can be reused for comparable work. It can therefore support consistent results across repeated operations. The company plans to extend 3D-Direct to further machine types in the future.
