Mazak has introduced the OPTONICS XB series of press brakes to the European market. The launch extends its sheet metal portfolio from laser cutting into bending. The range supports a connected workflow from CAD and part preparation through to cutting and bending. It also uses a hybrid drive system designed to reduce energy use, noise and maintenance requirements. The XB series is sold under the “Powered by Mazak” banner. It combines OPTONICS press brake technology with Mazak’s European service, application engineering and parts support. The machines are designed for workshops that need comprehensive standard specifications and flexible configurations. They suit manufacturers handling varied product mixes, short runs and higher-volume work.

The launch range includes the XB 130-32, XB 170-32 and XB 250-41. Press capacities range from 130 to 250 tonnes. Maximum bending lengths range from 3,200 to 4,100 mm. Each model is available in A and B versions. High-rigidity construction, linear scales and CNC-controlled crowning are designed to maintain consistent bending accuracy. This applies across different component sizes and production volumes.

Hybrid drive targets energy use and cycle time

A patented hybrid drive is central to the XB series. Independent electric servo motors and pumps operate the Y1 and Y2 axes. They supply power only when required. This arrangement supports ram acceleration and bending speeds of up to 15 mm/sec. It also reduces standby losses and operating noise. According to Mazak, the hybrid system can reduce energy consumption by up to 60% compared with a conventional hydraulic press brake. It can also provide cycle speeds up to 25% faster. This combination is relevant where press brakes operate for extended periods. It also supports applications where repeated bending cycles affect overall lead time. The system reduces the regular maintenance needs associated with conventional hydraulic arrangements. It therefore supports the company’s Go Green policy, which addresses the environmental impact of machinery throughout its operating life. For users, the stated objectives are lower operating costs and greater machine availability.

Tooling and gauging options for varied work

The XB machines can be specified with Euro-style or WILA-style tool clamping. Both manual and hydraulic clamping options are available. This allows the configuration to match the workshop’s tooling approach and changeover requirements. A range of multi-axis, high-speed servo backgauges supports sheet positioning. Standard and advanced gauging options are available for repeatable positioning, including on complex components. CNC crowning and rigid machine construction support stable results when material, bend geometry and production quantities vary.

The control system is based on OPTONICS SmoothBEND NC. It uses a 21-inch dual touchscreen. Operators can access bending data, program information and graphical displays directly at the machine. The interface is designed to simplify program handling and operation. This is particularly relevant when the press brake processes a broad range of parts rather than a limited series of repeat jobs.

Digital workflow from design to bending

Mazak positions the XB series within a broader sheet metal workflow. This includes its laser cutting systems and software. MAZAK SMART SYSTEM Bend and MAZAK SMART SYSTEM Design support part design, unfolding, laser cutting and bending preparation within the same process chain. Offline preparation is intended to reduce non-productive time at the press brake. The software also supports grouping parts with common tooling setups. This approach can improve throughput when production involves many product variants and relatively low volumes. Reducing setup-related interruptions is particularly relevant in workshops where bending speed is not the only bottleneck. Program preparation, tool selection and job organisation can also affect productivity.

OPTONICS customers also have access to Mazak’s European service organisation, application engineering resources and parts supply network. This includes the European Parts Centre in Belgium. As a result, the new bending range has a support structure aligned with Mazak’s existing machine tool and laser cutting activities in Europe.
